El acontecimiento más popular del festival suele ser la "Batalla de los sexos" cuya cuarta edición se disputó la noche del sábado. Resultó otro éxito tremendo. esta vez fueron los hombres los campeones de la jornada, venciendo a las damas por 2:1. Este año, la actividad contó con la presencia de la ministra de Turismo Samantha Sacramento.
El presentador fue el director del torneo, Stuart Conquest, agregando al acontecimiento un toque genial e incomparable. Las árbitras fueron Margit Brokko (Estonia) y Ana Srebrnic (Eslovenia).

La capitana del equipo femenino era Antoaneta Stefanova (Bulgaria), ex campeona del mundo. El capitán del equipo masculino era Nigel Short (Inglaterra), tres veces campeón de Gibraltar.

Tras una larga lucha con ambos equipos llegaron con el marcador igualado 1:1. Fueron los hombres quienes se impusieron en la tercera partida y por lo tanto se coronaron campeones. El marcador final quedó en 2:1.
Al final del desafío, el capitán del equipo masculino, Nigel Short entregó un cheque por 1.000 libras esterlinas a Shirley Callaghan como donación a la Neuroblastoma Society.
Los favoritos empiezan a reaccionar en el abierto, pero no todos: Hikaru Nakamura tiene medio punto menos que los diez líderes; entre ellos, el cubano Lázaro Bruzón y el español David Antón. Y tanto el indio Viswanathan Anand, pentacampeón del mundo, como el francés Laurent Fressinet están ya casi descartados para la lucha por el primer puesto, a falta de cuatro rondas.
Nakamura no pudo pasar del empate con negras frente al austriaco Markus Ragger, lo que le obliga a un rendimiento máximo en la recta final si quiere revalidar su triunfo de 2015. Anand y Fressinet tiene un punto menos que los líderes; aunque logren cuatro victorias seguidas es improbable que ganen el torneo.
Antón logró que la india Dronavalli Harika encajase su primera derrota en el torneo tras sus asombrosos resultados en las tres jornadas anteriores: victoria sobre Short y empates con Rapport y Bruzón. Éste se impuso en una lucha muy espectacular y de alto riesgo al alemán Alexánder Donchenko. Los rivales de Antón y Bruzón en la 7ª ronda (de un total de 10) serán muy duros: el cubano tendrá la iniciativa de las blancas ante el indio Pentala Harikrishna y el español conducirá las negras frente a Rapport.
