Ian Nepomniachtchi, quien había comenzado la tercera jornada empatado a puntos con Aronian, perdió en la novena ronda contra Hikaru Nakamura y por lo tanto ahora tiene dos puntos menos que el líder. La séptima ronda comenzó de manera positiva para Garry Kasparov. Jugó una partida agresiva contra David Navara y obtuvo una posición ganadora. Pero eso no fue el final de la película. Los duelos Quang Liem Le vs. Viswanathan Anand e Hikaru Nakamura vs. Leinier Dominguez fueron empates sólidos.

Garry Kasparov recuperó la suerte cuando su oponente, Quang Liem Le, cometió un error y perdió una torre en una posición que había estado igualada previamente. El vietnamita se rindió. David Navara no logró mantener la buena racha y sacrificó dos peones contra Leinier Domínguez para armar un ataque. Pero los recursos defensivos de Domínguez fueron lo suficientemente buenos como para parar la iniciativa de su oponente y hasta alzarse con la victoria de la partida con las piezas negras. Ian Nepomniachtchi nuevamente firmó tablas tras triple repetición de jugadas, esta vez contra su compatriota Sergey Karjakin. Levon Aronian no logró aumentar su ventaja aunque sí había tenido una ligera iniciativa frente a Hikaru Nakamura. No le bastó para ganar. Viswanathan Anand y Fabiano Caruana empataron al final de una sólida partida en cuanto llegaron al movimiento obligatorio 30.

La novena y última ronda de la manga de partidas rápidas fue la más sangrienta de todo el torneo. ¡Todas las partidas concluyeron con victorias! Garry Kasparov perdió con negras frente a Fabiano Caruana tras haber jugado de manera demasiado pasiva en los momentos críticos. Eso permitió a su oponente convertir en piezas peligrosas sus peones pasados. Sergey Karjakin se apuntó su primera victoria, castigando a Viswanathan Anand por el error que había cometido. Quang Liem Le tenía ventaja en el final de su partida contra David Navara pero, tal y como este comentó más tarde, "en una partida de ajedrez cualquiera puede cometer un error". El error de Le le costó la partida cuando no pudo evitar que los peones pasados de Navara cruzaran el tablero hasta el otro lado. Ian Nepomniachtchi sufrió la primera derrota en este torneo. Perdió dos peones en el final y se tuvo que dar por vencido. Levon Aronian tomó el mando en solitario al derrotar a Leinier Dominguez, igualmente en un final de torres. La técnica de Aronian fue inmaculada.
