Levon Aronian optó no arriesgarse jugando con blancas contra Ding Liren porque se sentía cansado después de haber pasado mala noche sin dormir lo suficiente. Magnus Carlsen, por su parte, decidió retarle a Maxime Vachier-Lagrave en una variante poco conocida de la Siciliana Najdorf. Las semifinales se disputarán del 2 al 4 de diciembre. La final y la disputa por los puestos tres y cuatro se llevará a cabo del 6 al 8 de diciembre.
El formato de juego es una mezcla de tres sistemas de juego:
- dos partidas de ajedrez clásico
- dos partidas de ajedrez rápido
- cuatro partidas de ajedrez relámpago
Sistema de puntuación
Ajedrez clásico: 6 puntos por una victoria, 3 puntos por unas tablas y cero puntos por una derrota.
Ajedrez rápido: 4 puntos por una victoria, 2 puntos por unas tablas y cero puntos por una derrota.
Ajedrez relámpago: 2 puntos por una victoria, 1 punto por unas tablas y cero puntos por una derrota.
En paralelo se Festival de Ajedrez "London Chess Classic" con diversas actividades en paralelo. Uno de los puntos culminantes a ese respecto, será el Abierto FIDE que se disputará entre el 29 de noviembre y el 6 de diciembre (con una jornada de doble ronda día 30).
El día 30 de noviembre, además se disputará el Campeonato de Gran Bretaña por sistema eliminatorio con los cuartos de final. Competirán los cinco jugadores: Howell, Adams, McShane, Jones, Pert. Otros tres aún se podrán clasificar a lo largo del torneo. La final de dicha competición se disputará del día 4 a 6 de diciembre.
A parte de eso habrá conferencias sobre ajedrez y educación con Judit Polgar como invitada de honor; torneos de fin de semana, un torneo de ajedrez relámpago, torneos juveniles, exhibiciones de partidas simultáneas y un torneo con celebridades.
