El fin de semana, el Club de Ajedrez de San Luis sorprendió a todos con una declaración sobre "X", que está siendo discutida con entusiasmo allí, especialmente por la persona afectada. El Saint Louis Chess Club anunció que no tendría en cuenta a Hans Niemann para los torneos por invitación de 2024. El asunto se revisaría entonces.
En su comunicado, el Club de Ajedrez de San Luis indicó que, en general, no estaba satisfecho con los modales y el comportamiento del joven gran maestro estadounidense, pero también se refirió en particular a un incidente ocurrido en el hotel Chase Park Plaza de San Luis, utilizado por el Club de Ajedrez de San Luis para alojar a los participantes en los torneos del Centro de Ajedrez de San Luis. Se dice que Hans Niemann dañó el inventario y el mobiliario de su habitación en la 6ª planta tras perder una partida, al parecer en un momento de falta de autocontrol. El alcance de los daños es descrito de forma diferente por los implicados.
Las personas enteradas dicen que Niemann dañó espejos, azulejos, una mesa de mármol, etc. y causó daños por un total de varios miles de dólares. Al parecer, esta cantidad se le descontó del premio en metálico que ganó en los campeonatos de Estados Unidos. Además, el hotel le habría prohibido la entrada de por vida.
Dicen que el incidente ocurrió durante el último Campeonato de Estados Unidos, después de que Hans Niemann perdiera contra Ray Robson en la segunda ronda del torneo.
