El Chess Classic de Londres 2012 se llevará a cabo en el Centro de Conferencias Olympia a partir del sábado, 1 de diciembre y hasta el lunes, 10 de diciembre de 2012. Las partidas comenzarán a las 15:00 CET (14:00 hora local de Londres), excepto la cuarta ronda, que comenzará a las 17:00 CET (16:00 hora de Londres) y la última que será más temprano, a las 13:00 CET (12:00 hora de Londres). El control de tiempo será el clásico de dos horas para 40 movimientos, luego 30 minutos para los siguientes 20 movimientos y finalmente 30 minutos para terminar la partida.
Una victoria cuenta 3 puntos, unas tablas suman 1 punto y una derrota se valora con cero puntos (Regla de Bilbao). El sistema de desempate es el siguiente: 1) Cantidad de victorias, 2) Cantidad de victorias con las piezas negras, 3) El resultado de la partida disputada entre los dos jugadores con el marcador igualado. En el caso poco probable que aún así permaneciese el empate: 4) se jugarían 2 partidas a 15'+2" y de ser necesaria una partida a todo o nada con 6'+2" vs 5'+2" con la opción de ganar haciendo tablas para las negras. Si estuviesen igualados más de dos jugadores con la misma cantidad de puntos, se disputaría un torneo de desempate a doble vuelta con los jugadores en cuestión. En el torneo participarán nueve jugadores, entre los que están los 3 mejores del mundo. Tienen una valoración media de Elo de 2751. El jugador a quien toque descansar asistirá al equipo de comentaristas con las observaciones y análisis de las demás partidas.
Este año el grupo de participantes es más fuerte que nunca, con una valoración Elo
media más elevada que cualquiera en los torneos disputados en Gran Bretaña
en todos los tiempos. Encabezan la lista de los favoritos el Campeón del Mundo Vishy Anand, seguido por el ex campeón del mundo Vladimir Kramnik, y los dos mejores jugadores del mundo según la lista FIDE, Magnus Carlsen y Levon Aronian. Por primera vez también participará la mejor jugadora de todos los tiempos, Judit Polgar. Completan al plantel el Campeón de EE.UU. Hikaru Nakamura y los tres mejores jugadores de Gran Bretaña, Luke McShane, Michael Adams y Gawain Jones.
