A pesar del hecho que Islandia tenga tan pocos habitantes, hay sorprendentemente muchos s jugadores de ajedrez con títulos FIDE, entre ellos también diez grandes maestros activos.
Eso seguramente, eso tendrá que ver con la historia de Islandia y el hecho que fue allí donde se disputó el legendario duelo por el Campeonato del Mundo entre Bobby Fischer y Boris Spassky. Además, el ex presidente de la FIDE, Fridrik Ólafsson, también ha contribuido muchísimo a la gran cultura de ajedrez en Islandia.
En la capital de Islandia, Reikiavik, se puede visitar el Bobby Fischer Centre para ver, por ejemplo, las planillas firmadas por los jugadores.
Desde el año 1964, el famoso Abierto de Ajedrez de Reikiavik ha contado con muchos campeones celebres, por ejemplo, Mikhail Tal, Wang Hao, Levon Aronian, Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So y Anish Giri.
