Antes del Campeonato Mundial de Rápidas y Blitz en Nueva York, hubo una intensa discusión con la FIDE sobre el proyecto Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, que Carlsen está promocionando junto con el empresario hamburgués Jan Henric Buettner. Quince de los mejores jugadores del top 20 quieren participar. Sin embargo, la FIDE considera esta serie como una infracción de su control soberano autodefinido sobre el ajedrez organizado.
La FIDE también ha organizado Campeonatos Mundiales de Ajedrez Freestyle o Fischer Chess, pero no ha podido continuar en los últimos años.
