El torneo "Magnus Carlsen Invitational" se disputará entre el 18 de abril y el 3 de mayo. Participarán: el propio Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Ding Liren, Ian Nepomniachtchi und Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Hikaru Nakamura, Anish Giri y Alireza Firouzja. El torneo se disputará en dos fases. Primero habrá una ronda preliminatoria todos contra todos. A continuación se disputará una ronda de partidas eliminatorias .
Fase preliminatoria
Por sistema de liga: partidas de ajedrez rápido (15''+10')
En el caso de que hubiese un emapte al final de dicha fase, se disputaría una partida: blancas 5 minutos (con la obligación de ganar)negras con 4 minutos (les bastaría un empate para ganar el duelo). A continuación, de ser necesario una partida a todo o nada que se valoraría con 2:1.
Fase de partidas eliminatorias
Al final de la fase de partidas por sistema eliminatorio, en el caso de un empate se disputarían dos rondas con partidas de ajedrez relámpago (3'+2'') y a continuación, de ser necesario para el desempate, una partida a todo o nada.
Las partidas no se disputarán todas a la vez (salvo en la ronda 7). Se disputarán dos duelos en paralelo, respectivamente. Las semifinales se disputarán en dos días consecutivos.
