02/01/2018 – Durante un rato parecía que el mes de diciembre de 2017 iba a ser uno del que Magnus Carlsen preferiría olvidarse cuanto antes. Primero la actuación un poco regular en el clásico de Londres, luego el quinto puesto en el mundial de rápidas. No obstante, pudo salvar la recta final del año y se coronó Campeón del Mundo de Ajedrez Relámpago. Sergey Karjakin fue subcampeón y Anand, tras haber conquistado el máximo título en la modalidad de ajedrez rápido, se llevó la medalla de bronce. ¡Lo ha vuelto a conseguir! Magnus Carlsen, el penúltimo día del año 2017 se coronó Campeón del Mundo de Ajedrez Relámpago 2017. ¡Vaya actuación tan fantástica para clausurar el año! Carlsen había comenzado con 4 victorias e incluso se había impuesto al que terminó siendo líder tras la primera jornada, Sergey Karjakin. A continuación Carlsen firmó unas tablas con Maxime Vachier-Lagrave y luego tuvo otra racha victoriosa con 4 triunfos consecutivos. Se llevó el título de mejor ajedrecista relámpago del mundo ya antes de la última ronda. En la última partida firmó unas tablas rápidas con Levon Aronian.

¿Cuál es el secreto de Carlsen? En principio no hay ninguna receta especial y simplemente ha jugado a su manera. Eso sí: el segundo día de la competición de ajedrez relámpago jugó mucho más rápido de lo que lo había hecho en la primera. Parecía tener un minuto de ventaja en el reloj en prácticamente todas las partidas.

Blitz doesn't give players any kind of "warm up" time. It's the race against the clock from the starting gates. It seems Alexander wasn't quite mentally ready for that. 1.Nf3 d5 2.d4 Nf6 3.c4 e6 4.Nc3 Be7 5.Bf4 0-0 6.e3 Nbd7 7.c5 Ne4 Magnus sidesteps the usual 7...c6 lines. 8.Qa4!? An interesting novelty. Nxc3 9.bxc3 c6 10.Bd3? I don't like this standard bishop placement in this particular situation. White should have prepared for the upcoming e6-e5, by keeping his minor pieces away from the pawn fork. 10.Be2 Bf6 11.0-0 Re8 12.Bg3 e5 13.Rab1 would allow him to maintain his center. 10...Re8 11.0-0 Bf6 12.e4? Stubborn? Yes. Inappropriate? Nd7 This continues the old tired pattern of Karjakin's chess in 2017. For as long as his position remains safe he goes on with conventional moves. 13...c4!? would have been a small spark of creativity. 14.Nd2 Nb8? Now a first real error. That knight was needed on the K-side: 14...Nf8 15.f4 exf4 16.Rxf4 Be6 17.Qh5 b6 18.Raf1 Ng6 19.R4f2 Qd6 preparing to trade or evict the white queen after Qd6-e5. 15.f4 exf4 16.Rxf4 Nc6?! Things are getting serious, but Sergey is still not paying attention. 16...Be6 17.Qh5 Nd7 17.Qh5 b6 18.Raf1 Rf8 19.Nf3!?
19...Be6 One wonders if the players considered 19...g5 at all. 20.Rh4! would be the only reply, leading to a fascinating attack after gxh4 21.Bxh6 Bd7 22.Bg7‼ 20.Rh4!? This could have been refuted tactically, but in the frame of the ongoing battle Magnus made the right call. f6 21.Qg6 Qf7? This is where Karjakin failed to live up to his well-earned reputation of a scrappy tough defender. Anand habló con ChessBase India sobre sus experiencias en Riad:

"¡Estoy tan contento! Es muy difícil describir la sensación que estoy teniendo. En Riad he demostrado que soy capaz de mostrar un buen rendimiento. En los mundiales de ajedrez rápido y relámpago anteriores nunca había conseguido competir por uno de los primeros puestos. Tampoco parecía que iba a ser cosa fácil.
 
Los dos primeros días de la competición de ajedrez rápido había jugado especialmente bien. El tercer día, de alguna manera comencé a jugar algo más lento y firmé tablas en 3 partidas. Magnus había comenzado a ganar partidas y se me deslilzó de las manos. La verdad es que incluso me preguntaba si podría terminar en el podio. Afortunadamente, en la partida contra Grischuk conseguí una ventaja muy buena y fue capaz de presionarle. Eso significaba que podría liberarme del grupo de perseguidores para quizá sumarme al primer puesto de Magnus Carlsen.
 
Bu (Xiangzhi) jugaba de manera muy sólida con blancas y por eso opté por aceptar las tablas. Eso, sin embargo, significaba que tenía que esperar a ver qué iba a pasar con Magnus. Pero me lo tomé de manera filosófica. Si Magnus triunfaba, se lo merecería. En todo caso procuré prepararme mentalmente para un posible duelo de desempate. Tras algunos vaivenes, pensaba que desde luego Magnus necesitaría que Grischuk cometiera un error para ganar. Primero se acercaron Nepomniachtchi y Fedeseev y me di cuenta de que en realidad mi oponente en el desempate iba a ser Fedoseev, en todo caso.
 
Todo ocurrió muy de prisa. El árbitro te comenta que debes jugar y solo tienes unos pocos minutos para reponerte. Es todo muy caótico. No puedes trabajar mucho. Jugué las dos partidas de ajedrez relámpago y las jugué bastante bien. En la segunda, cuando tenía una pieza de ventaja, no hacía falta que la devolviera. Afortunadamente mi posición era tan buena que incluso a continuación me parecía que estaba a salvo y con recursos. Me siento muy aliviado y, desde luego, esa es la mejor manera de entrar en el año 2018. ¡Estoy muy contento!

La segunda mejor actuación en la segunda jornada fue la de Levon Aronian. Se olvidó del funesto marcador de 5,5/11 de la primera jornada y obtuvo 8,5/10 en la segunda.
