La partida entre Levon Aronian y Magnus Carlsen fue el duelo directo entre los dos líderes. En una fantástica batalla en la Dragón con colores opuestos, la partida se iba tranquilizando rápidamente tras el cambio de damas y de más material. El final de torres estaba totalmente igualado.

Anish Giri planteó la defensa Eslava del Gambito de Dama contra Vishy Anand y alcanzó una ligera ventaja gracias a la ventaja de espacio que había creado y debido a la pareja de alfiles. Anand simplificó la partida y gracias a su experiencia, la condujo hacia las tablas de manera muy rutinaria.

Alexander Grischuk y Fabiano Caruana plantearon una salvaje batalla en la variante con Af4 del Gambito de Dama Rehusado. Caruana salió de manera favorable de la apertura y mandó una avalancha de peones hacia la posición de las blancas. Con el sacrificio de una pieza por dos peones, Caruana jugó la partida a todo o nada. Más adelante dejó escapar una posibilidad y Alexander Grischuk logró consolidar su posición más o menos. Finalmente, el ruso logró convertir su ventaja de material en una victoria.
