17/01/2019 – Ayer en la quinta ronda, Magnus Carlsen conquistó la primera victoria en el Torneo Tata Steel Chess 2019 contra le joven holandés, Jorden van Foreest. A la vez acabó con la racha de tablas en las partidas clásicas de ajedrez que había durado 21 partidas. Ding Liren se apuntó la segunda victoria frente a Sam Shankland. Tanto Ding Liren como Magnus Carlsen ganaron sus respectivas con negras. Todas las demás partidas del grupo Masters concluyeron en tablas. Tras cinco rondas Ian Nepomniachtchi y Ding Liren están en cabeza de la clasificación del grupo Masters con 3,5/5 puntos. En el grupo Challengers (en Wijk aan Zee), los dos principales favoritos por fuerza de juego, Anton Korobov y Vladislav Kovalev, mandan con 3,5/5. Ritmo de juego
100 minutos por 40 movimientos, a continuación 50 minutos por los próximos 20 movimientos für 40 Züge, y finalmente 15 minutos para terminar la partida. Hay un incremento de tiempo de 30 segundos por movimiento a partir del comienzo de la partida.
