En la 5ª ronda, los participantes del grupo Masters se dirigieron al famoso estadio de fútbol "Johan Cruyff Arena". El estadio es la sede del Ajax, el club de fútbol más famoso de los Países Bajos que tuvo a Johan Cruijff como máxima estrella en diferentes periodos entre 1964 y 1983. Considerado como una de las figuras más influyentes en la historia del fútbol, el estilo de juego y la filosofía futbolística de Cruyff han influido tanto en entrenadores como en jugadores. Los clubes Ajax Ámsterdam y el Barça (Futbolclub Barcelona) se encuentran entre los clubes que han desarrollado academias juveniles basadas en los métodos de entrenamiento de Cruyff. Su filosofía como entrenador ayudó a sentar las bases para la reactivación de los éxitos internacionales del Ajax en la década de 1990, y los éxitos del fútbol español tanto a nivel de clubes como internacional durante los años 2008 a 2012 se han citado como prueba del impacto de Cruyff sobre el fútbol contemporáneo.

Carlsen, un conocido aficionado al fútbol, quizá se sentiría inspirado por el espléndido escenario -y por el jugador al que rinde homenaje-, ya que optó valientemente por una continuación (con 14.Aa3) sacrifició una pieza para prevenir que su oponente se enrocase en el flanco de rey.
Abdusattorov se comió el material y finalmente ganó la iniciativa. A continuación surgió una entretenida lucha, en la que Carlsen mostró su habitual ingenio y finalmente logró simplificar hasta un final de damas con un peón de desventaja. El final de la partida estaba complicado y también podría haber concluido en tablas. Pero entonces, Carlsen cometió un error decisivo. Se rindió tras el movimiento 60.
