Eduard Frey nació en la primavera de 1967, es economista (lic. et mag. rer, pol.) y trabaja como entrenador en recursos humanos. Aprendió el juego de niño con su padre. El ajedrez es una afición sin calificación. Desde 1976 acude con frecuencia al Festival de Ajedrez de Biel, así como a Lucerna (Olimpiada de 1982 y Campeonatos del Mundo por equipos de 1985, 1989, 1993 y 1997), y a los torneos internacionales de Zúrich o la serie Open de Lugano. Frey habló con muchos jugadores de primera fila; conoció más de cerca a Viktor Korchnoi, Wolfgang Uhlmann y Mark Taimanov.
