Partida 1: victoria de Nakamura
Comenzó con una apertura poco habitual pero salió absolutamente a favor de Nakamura. Aronian tiene que haber subestimado la fuerza de la iniciativa de las piezas blancas y no fue capaz mantenerlo bajo control. Nakamura jugó una partida impecable y se apuntó la victoria.

Partida 2: victoria de Aronian
Aronian no perdió tiempo a la hora de devolver el golpe. Condujo la segunda partida a un final que tenía pinta de manso, pero con gato encerrado. Al ver el resultado de la partida, hay que admitir que las cosas no estaban tan fáciles. La técnica que aplicó en esta partida, es la que solía utilizar también el joven José Raúl Capablanca en su duelo contra Juan Corzo en su duelo de 1901, en concreto en la novena partida del mismo.

Partida 3: tablas
La tercera partida duelo se podría clasificaro como "asunto interesante y difícil de predecir". Aronian planteó 1...Cf6 y 2...g6 contra 1.d4 y 2.c4, jugado por Nakamura. Parecía probable una Grunfeld, con cierto riesgo también de resultar ser una Defensa India de Rey. Nakamura jugó la anti-Grunfeld 3.f3 tras lo cual surgió una posición rara. El juego arriesgado pero escrupuloso por parte de Aronian le brindó la oportunidad de presionar sobre un peón aislado. Resultó demasiado cauteloso, cambiando piezas para alcanzar un final igualado en lugar de presionar más para obtener ventaja.
