La primera ronda sin duda fue un fuerte comienzo del torneo. La partida entre Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (MVL) y Pentala Harikrishna resultó ser salvaje desde el principio. MVL optó por una variante poco usual en la Trompowsky y recibió una bofetada cuando Harikrishna descorchó el poderoso sacrificio de 5...e5!? que forzó a la defensa a las blancas. Solo fue gracias al juego preciso de MVL y la pasividad del indio que finalmente el francés logró mantener las tablas a duras penas. Pero las blancas llevaban la ventaja durante toda la partida.

Mientras que Alexander Motylev y Radoslaw Wojtaszek tenían su propia partida interesante. Llegaron pronto al final de la partida, pero desde luego fue uno interesante en cuanto a la estrategia. Motylev percibía que la posición se le estaba escapando de las manos porque con cada movimiento le castigaba por sus peones débiles y demasiado avanzados. Sacrificó un peón para optener cierta compensación, pero no fue suficiente y el jugador polaco se alzó con una importante ventaja y se llevó la victoria de la partida con una técnica magnífica.

En todo caso, el punto culminante del día sin duda fue la partida de la Campeona del Mundo Hou Yifan. La china aplastó a Anish Giri, tal cual, aunque este último tiene más de 100 puntos más de Elo que Yifan.
