Radoslav Wojtaszek y Maxime Vachier-Lagrave jugaron una partida larga, que duró 38 movimientos, pero aún así se puede decir que optaron por la vía corta. Ya simplificaron mucho las cosas en la variante del fianchetto de la Grünfeld-India y tras 20 movimientos se había alcanzado el final. Ejecutaron 18 movimientos más y se acabó la partida con unas tablas.

Los otro dos encuentros fueron un tanto más dramáticos. Alexander Motylev, jugando con negras, salió con ventaja de la apertura en su partida Eslava contra Anish Giri y conquistó un peón. Pero cuando comenzaron los apuros de tiempo, Alexander se enredó en las complicadas maniobras tácticas de la partida y perdió calidad. Giri se aprovechó de ello y se apuntó la segunda victoria consecutiva.

Hubo drama también en la partida entre Hou Yifan y Pentala Harikrishna. En la variante principal de la Defensa Caro-Kann, la china sacrificó calidad en el mediojuego para obtener posibilidades de ganar la partida. Recibió dos peones a cambio. A continuación, Hou Yifan procuró sacar a relucir sus peones, mientras que Pentala Harikrishna aspiraba a colocar sus torres de tal manera que pudieran ser activas.
