A pesar de las tres tablas en esta ronda, no se puede decir en absoluto que haya sido un día pacífico. El lema de la partida entre Pentala Harikrishna y Maxime Vachier-Lagrave fue "¡a sacrificar!" Las negras sacrificaron calidad con el motivo de obtener más actividad. Pero como respuesta, el jugador indio también sacrificó una pieza. Al final, las negras deberían haber ganado pero debido a los apuros de tiempo, "MVL" (Vachier-Lagrave) no consigió triunfar.

Anish Giri planteó una excelente preparación en una agresiva variante de la Siciliana Scheveningen y no cabía duda de que Hou Yifan se encontraba en apuros. Pero de alguna manera, la Campeona del Mundo unió fuerzas y recursos y a pesar de una clara desventaja logró salvar el cuello. Eso sí, sufriendo.
