Magnus Carlsen se presentó al tablero con un ojo morado. El día de descanso (martes) había jugado un partido de fútbol. Se tomó la cosa con humo y comentó en instagram en plan de broma:
"El duelo está entrando en calor ahora".
En uno de los anteriores días de descanso no le había jugando al fútobol...

Caruana decidió que quería aclarar la situación y optó por una posición inferior con alfiles de colores opuestos con 17...Axf3?! —. Ese era el momento en el que Magnus Carlsen podría haber relucido su verdadero potencial.
Pero a partir de se momento, Fabiano Caruana se defendió con una tremenda tenacidad y estaba al tanto de las circunstancias y demostró valor en el momento que hizo falta:
Caruana contraatacó, jugando 25...gxh5, dañando la estructura de sus peones intencionadamente y confiando en sus cálculos. Unos movimientos más adelante, unas tablas parecían el resultado más probable también en esta partida.
