Italia ocupaba la segunda posición antes de la última ronda, con la misma puntuación que el equipo estadounidense pero medio punto de tablero menos. Una victoria contra Montenegro habría dado a los italianos el segundo puesto en la clasificación final y la medalla de plata.
Italia también se colocó en cabeza con las victorias de David y Godena. En el tablero tres, Ortega también estaba en una posición ventajosa contra Miljanic, pero desaprovechó su ventaja y perdió la partida. En el tablero cuatro, Borgo también ganó su partida para Italia contra Nikac. Surgió la oportunidad de forzar las tablas, pero en lugar de eso acabó en un final de torres, que perdió. Así que la partida terminó 2:2 e Italia aún no estuvo a salvo.

England, Island und Italien kamen alle auf 14 Punkte, die Brettpunkte entschieden über die Medaillenvergabe. England gewann Silber, Island mit einem halben Punkt mehr als Italien Bronze. Italien ging leer aus.
Durch den hohen Sieg von England gegen das chinesische Frauenteam, zog Englands Frauenteam, mit der deutschen DSB-Präsidentin Ingrid Lauterbach, die nach nach einem beruflichen Aufenthalt in England seit vielen Jahren im englischen Verband gemeldet ist, noch an den Chinesinnen vorbei und gewann Gold im Frauenwettbewerb.
