Fedoseev se ha clasificado para la semifinal, pero Karjakin aún tendrá que disputar un duelo de desempate contra Sam Shankland. Ambos han ganado una partida, en los cuartos de final. Los dos finalistas de la Copa del Mundo 2021 recibirán una plaza en el Torneo de Candidatos 2022. En el caso de la Copa del Mundo Femenina incluso se van a clasificar tres jugadores para el Torneo de Candidatas.
La nueva Copa del Mundo ha sido ampliada en cantidades. En lugar de hasta ahora 128 jugadores, en la sección abierta participarán 206 jugadores.
En la Copa del Mundo Femenina, la cantidad de participantes ha sido aumentada desde 64 a ahora 103.
En la competición femenina en la ronda incial jugarán 78 ajedrecistas. A las 39 ganadoras se sumarán otras 25 jugadores de la elite mundial más que se incoporarán en la ronda 2.
Ambas competiciones se van a disputar con el formato conocido de la Copa del Mundo. Dos jugadoras o jugadores se enfrentarán en un mini duelo a dos partidas. En el caso de que hubiese un empate, se disputaría un duelo de desempate a ritmo rápido, relámpago y finalmente, de ser necesario se disputaría una partida "a todo o nada" (Armageddon).
La bolsa de premios de la FIDE asciende a 1.892.500 dólares estadounidenses y a 676.250 dólares estadounidenses para el torneo femenino.
El lugar del encontro será el Centro Galaxy Entertainment en el complejo turístico de Gazprom en las montañas, en Krasnaja Poljana, Sotschi.
