11/04/2017 – Dicen que su abuelo era español. Nació en Nueva Orleans el 22 de junio 1837 en el seno de una familia acomodada. Aprendió a jugar al ajedrez viendo las partidas de su padre y de su tío, llamando la atención por su prodigiosidad. Ganó el Primer Congreso de Ajedrez de los Estados Unidos de América en 1857 y un año más tarde viajó a Londres y París para enfrentarse allí con los mejores jugadores de Europa. Se impuso a todo el mundo, incluyendo a Adolf Anderssen, Johann Jacob Löwenthal y Henry Edward Bird. Retó a Howard Staunton, pero el inglés siempre encontró alguna excusa para eludir el duelo.

Paul Morphy
Cuando regresó a EE. UU. trabajó como abogado, pero sin mucho éxito. Ya no jugaba tanto al ajedrez y en 1867 se retiró por completo. Padeció algún tipo de trastorno mental y falleció el 10 de julio de 1884 en Nueva Orleans a la temprana edad de 47 años.
