En el grupo estrella, Magnus Carlsen comenzó el torneo con una victoria con negras frente a Vincent Keymer en la primera ronda, otra victoria también con negras frente Paco Vallejo en la segunda ronda y unas tablas en una partida reñida con Vishy Anand. Ritmo de juego: 100 min./40 movimientos, 50 min./20 mov. y 15 min. para el resto de la partida con un incremento de 30 segundos por movimento a partir del primer movimiento.

- Cantidad de victorias
- Cantidad de victorias con negras
- Resultado por duelo directo
En el caso de que dos jugadores quedasen empatados en el primer puesto se disputarían dos partidas a 10 minutos + 2 segundos de incremento por movimiento. De ser necesario a continuación dos partidas de 5 minutos + 2 seg. Finalmente una partida a todo o nada (6 minutos para las blancas, 5 minutos para las negras y las negras ganan el duelo si consiguen empatar).
