Maxime Vachier-Lagrave es uno de los perseguidores más cercanos del líder del torneo, Magnus Carlsen. En el enfrentamiento de ayer entre ambos, el francés jugó con blancas contra Carlsen, pero Magnus no es fácil de vencer. Plantearon una larga variante de la defensa Berlinesa. Maxime siguió el sistema de dos partidas anteriores disputadas en el año 2013, jugando 12.f3 en lugar de 12.Cxe6. Como consecuencia hubo un sacrificio de peón. Vachier-Lagrave obtuvo cierta iniciativa, pero el Campeón del Mundo gobernó el barco hacia aguas más tranquilas y finalmente lo amarró en el muelle de las tablas.
En la variante del Fianchetto de la defensa Grünfeld, Nils Grandelius logró aguantar el equilibrio jugando con negras durante mucho tiempo, pero el sueco perdió el control alrededor del movimiento 35 y Eljanov ganó la partida.
Pentala Harikrishna, jugando con negras, optó por la defensa Francesa contra Anish Giri. En la variante clásica optó por el movimiento moderno 8…b6. Giri intentó progresar por el flanco de rey y por el centro pero el contrajuego de Harikrishna por el flanco de dama era más eficaz y así este último se apuntó la victoria.
El tema de la partida entre Li Chao y Veselin Topalobv fue la variante Moscú de la Semieslava. En el movimiento 16, el chino sacrificó un peón con el avance d4-d5 y obtuvo un juego activo para sus piezas. No obstante la iniciativa de las blancas se esfumó y finalmente la partida terminó en tablas en un final de torres.
La partida entre Kramnik y Aronian también terminó en tablas.
