El duelo en la cima resultó emocionante: Francia lo tenía difícil en los tableros en los que jugaba con negras (2 y 4) y las esperanzas recaían sobre los hombros de Etienne Bacrot, que afrontaba un final prometedor, y de Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, que consiguió presionar sobre su oponente en una posición que había tenido pinta de ser ingenua.
Un ambicioso sacrificio de calidad al comienzo del mediojuego le trajo un final doloroso a Evgeny Tomashevsky. No obstante, tuvo una buena idea para defenderse y logró salvar medio punto y la victoria del equipo ruso en la séptima ronda.
