Svane triunfa en Italia
El Sardinia World Chess Festival 2026 tuvo lugar del 3 al 10 de mayo en Orosei, Cerdeña. La sección principal se disputó en el Club Hotel Marina Beach. El evento fue un torneo suizo a nueve rondas, con un control de tiempo clásico de 90 minutos para toda la partida y un incremento de 30 segundos desde la primera jugada. Participaron diez jugadores con 2600 Elo o más, incluidos dos por encima de 2700: Ian Nepomniachtchi, Parham Maghsoodloo, Ivan Saric, Karthikeyan Murali y Frederik Svane ingresaron al torneo como los cinco mejores rankeados.

Oro es ahora el segundo GM más joven de la historia
El resultado de Faustino Oro fue la otra gran historia del torneo. El argentino de 12 años, que comenzó como 23.ª cabeza de serie con un Elo de 2528, sumó 6/9 puntos y terminó 16.º, con una performance de 2594. La puntuación le alcanzó para conseguir su tercera y última norma de GM y, dado que ya había superado la barrera de los 2500 Elo, se hizo con el título.
La norma quedó prácticamente asegurada antes de que se disputara la última partida. Oro había alcanzado 6/8 tras obtener victorias clave con las piezas negras contra Guido Caprio y Bartlomiej Niedbala en las rondas seis y ocho, y luego fue emparejado con Nepomniachtchi en la ronda final. Debido al alto rating del GM ruso, a Oro le bastaba con presentarse a la partida para completar el requisito de la norma. Nepo ganó el encuentro de 55 jugadas en una Defensa Nimzo-India, pero el resultado no afectó a la obtención del título de Oro.

El argentino había conseguido su primera norma de gran maestro y superado los 2500 Elo en el torneo Leyendas y Prodigios de Madrid el año pasado, antes de sumar su segunda norma en el Magistral Szmetan-Girardelli de Buenos Aires en diciembre.

The Elephant Gambit (1.e4.e5 2.Nf3 d5!?) has never really been given the attention it deserves. It is a very useful surprise weapon.
