Las competiciones principales se disputan en dos grupos, con 14 jugadores en cada uno de ellos. La sección de los jugadores más fuertes se llama "Masters" y el otro grupo se denomina "Challengers". En paralelo habrá muchas más actividades como torneos de fin de semana, abiertos, etc.

En 2016, al igual que en 2015, habrá dos jornadas fuera de Wijk aan Zee. La quinta ronda se disputará en el centro científico NEMO en Ámsterdam el día 21 de enero.

La décima ronda, el día 27 de enero se disputará en Utrecht. En 2015 allí se inició el Tour de Francia de ciclismo. El lugar de juego será el "Spoorwegmuseum" (museo del Ferrocarril)
El torneo Tata Steel Chess cuenta con dos torneos principales, Masters y Challengers. Ambas competiciones se disputan por sistema de liga, es decir todos se enfrentan con todos. En ambos grupos participarán 14 jugadores. La primera ronda de ambas competiciones se disputará el 16 de enero de 2016. Todas las rondas en Wijk aan Zee comenzarán a las 13:30 CET, excepto por la última, el día 31 de enero, que arrancará a las 12:00 CET. Las rondas del grupo Masters fuera de Wijk aan Zee (en Ámsterdam y Utrecht) comenzarán a las 14:00 CET.
El ritmo de juego será de 100 minutos para los primeros 40 movimientos, seguido por 50 minutos para los siguientes 20 movimientos. A continuación quedarán 15 minutos, más 30 segundos de incremento por movimiento para el resto de la partida.

La final de los campeonatos de escolares
En cooperación con la Real Federación Holandesa de Ajedrez, la LXXVIII edición del Torneo Tata Steel contará con una actividad más en Wijk aan Zee. El día de la inauguración del torneo, el 15 de enero de 2015, se disputará la Final de los Campeonatos Escolares de Holanda, en la sala De Moriaan. Doce equipos medirán sus fuerzas. Los ganadores subirán al podio la noche de la clausura del torneo Tata Steel Chess junto con los grandes maestros. Además habrá torneos infantiles en varias localidades. Dichas actividades forman parte del programa de actvidades denominado "Futuras generaciones".
