Van Foreest defendió su peón de b5 con 68...Rc6?, cuando lo mejor habría sido sacrificar el peón con 68...h4 (según opinaban los módulos de ajedrez). El problema para las negras es que el peón blanco de la casilla f es demasiado veloz y el rey negro no tiene ninguna posibilidad de capturar el peón de b4 después de que la torre negra se sacrificara a si misma en f8. Kovalev se apuntó la victoria tras 79 movimientos.

Ritmo de juego
100 minutos por 40 movimientos, a continuación 50 minutos por los próximos 20 movimientos für 40 Züge, y finalmente 15 minutos para terminar la partida. Hay un incremento de tiempo de 30 segundos por movimiento a partir del comienzo de la partida.
