Kramnik alcanzó una victoria en la apertura y durante el medio juego hasta aquel movimiento que Anish Giri clasificó como "movimiento erróneo con el peón":
Anish Giri, al igual que los módulos de ajedrez, opinaban que ya era hora para acercarse a 19.g3, mientras que el movimiento de Kramnik, 19.e5, le permitió a Giri ofrecer un sacrificio de calidad en plan Petrosian tras 19...b6 20.Af3 Aa6.
Tres movimientos más adelante desplazó su peón a la casilla g3, lo cual resultó ser un error:

Ritmo de juego
100 minutos por 40 movimientos, a continuación 50 minutos por los próximos 20 movimientos für 40 Züge, y finalmente 15 minutos para terminar la partida. Hay un incremento de tiempo de 30 segundos por movimiento a partir del comienzo de la partida.
Sistema de desempate
En el caso de que al final de la competició (tras 13 rondas), dos o más jugadores quedasen empatados por puntos, se disputaría un desempate en la modalidad de partidas de ajedrez relámpago.
