El campeonato de ajedrez rápido con secciones absoluta y femenina, se disputará del 26 al 28 de diciembre de 2017. A continuación, los días 29 y 30 se disputará el Campeonato del Mundo de Ajedrez Relámpago. Está en juego una bolsa de premios récord: 2.000.000 de dólares estadounidenses. Los torneos absolutos cuentan con unos 750.000 dólares en metálico, mientas que las competiciones femeninas repartirán 250.000 dólares en ambos acontecimientos. La FIDE cobrará el 20 % del importe total.
El criterio para poder inscribirse es la valoración Elo. Los participantes en las secciones absolutas necesitan valoraciones por encima de 2600 puntos Elo y las jugadoras deben tener un Elo de 2300 o superior. La marca mínima de Elo puede ser en cualquiera de los tres ritmos de juego (clásico, rápido o relámpago) y debe estar acreditada entre septiembre y octubre.
